Iran–U.S. Memorandum Advances After Internal Approval, Says Iranian Leadership
Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei announced he has permitted a newly signed memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States to proceed, despite personally holding a different view initially. He granted permission only after explicit assurances from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian that Iran would not submit to excessive American demands and would safeguard the rights of the nation and the Resistance Front. Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his father Ayatollah Ali Khamenei after the latter was killed in a joint U.S.-Israeli airstrike on February 28, has not appeared in public since taking office on March 8 due to safety concerns. While his father had historically rejected negotiations with the U.S. as unwise, this breakthrough agreement follows desperate diplomatic pressure from the American president, though future in-person talks do not guarantee Iran's acceptance of U.S. positions.
